Getting Outside is so Healing

Summertime at Engedi Refuge is a great time to introduce our residents to the wonders of the great outdoors in the Pacific Northwest.  Many of our residents have never seen or experienced many things that we often take for granted like the mountains, forests, lakes and the ocean.  We have found that leading someone into the grandeur and peacefulness of nature has such a good effect on their soul and increases their sense of wonder and anticipation for what is possible in life.  We absolutely LOVE watching them have those “Oh wow!” moments.

Some of the awesome activities we get to share with them each year are:

  • Camping at Deception Pass, which provides multiple opportunities for fun and wonder like; kayaking on the Cranberry Lake, hiking the forest trails, and watching the sunset over the Puget Sound.

  • Exploring the trails at Artist Point and seeing stunning views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan.  We often show them the headwaters of the Nooksack river on that trip as well.

  • The ‘Promise 23 Ranch’, four-day horse camp in the Methow Valley on the East side of the mountains every September.  This is such a significant time of trail rides, nature walks, and deep spiritual talks.

The great mountaineer, John Muir, once said:

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine into trees.”

So true….and worth the effort.

Engedi Refuge is about providing safety, peace, truth and hope for people who need it the most. Going outside is one of the best ways to find those things, and it is so healing.
